Step-by-Step Instructions for Black Bean Burger
- Drain and rinse the black beans in a colander until the water runs clear. Let the beans sit to drain properly.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions and garlic, sauté for 3-4 minutes until onions turn translucent.
- In a mixing bowl, mash the rinsed black beans with a fork, leaving some chunks for texture. Mix with sautéed onions and garlic.
- Stir breadcrumbs, beaten egg (or flaxseed meal), cumin, chili powder, salt, pepper, and optional cilantro into the mixture until combined.
- Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape each into a patty about 1 inch thick.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Toast burger buns if desired, and assemble the black bean burgers with your favorite toppings.
