Preparation
- Line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper for easy removal of the toffee.
- Measure out all your ingredients, including unsalted butter, granulated sugar, salt, water, and vanilla extract.
Making the Toffee Base
- In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine butter, sugar, salt, and water over medium heat. Stir constantly for about 10-15 minutes until the mixture reaches a deep golden color and a temperature of 300°F on a candy thermometer.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Pouring and Spreading
- Immediately pour the hot toffee onto the prepared baking dish and use a heat-resistant spatula to spread it evenly.
Adding Chocolate
- While the toffee is still warm, sprinkle the chocolate chips over the surface. Allow them to sit for about 2 minutes, then use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate over the toffee base.
Sprinkling Nuts
- Sprinkle your choice of chopped nuts over the melted chocolate and gently press them in.
Cooling
- Allow the toffee to cool at room temperature for about 2 hours, or refrigerate for 30 minutes. Once hardened, break the toffee into bite-sized pieces.
